Why does a well-off young man abandon all his possessions to head off into the wilderness? That’s what Jon Krakauer and the rest of America wondered when Christopher Johnson McCandless was found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in 1992. Overview
Why does a well-off young man abandon all his possessions to head off into the wilderness? That’s what Jon Krakauer and the rest of America wondered when Christopher Johnson McCandless was found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in 1992. In this classic exploration and coming-of-age novel, Krakauer dives deeply into the life of McCandless and the reasoning behind his desire to break free from the world he knew.

A fan of explorers like Jack London and John Muir, Christopher didn’t choose the traditional path after graduating college in 1991. Instead of finding a career or traveling a few weeks in another country, Christopher donated $25,000 of his savings to charity, stripped himself of his possessions, and gave himself a new name – Alexander Supertramp. Now as Alexander – a man without any connections or family – he hitchhiked to Alaska and headed into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley without a single map. Though his endeavour was bold, it was also brief. McCandless was found dead four months after the start of his trip, killed by one fatal mistake.

Though many who heard McCandless’s story thought he was just a young man with a death wish, Krakauer believed he was in search of something much greater. Krakauer explores how young men like McCandless come to be, as well as the environment and psychology that motivates them. This breathtaking novel is less about the tragedy of McCandless’s life and more about an inherent desire for exploration inside every man.
